Day in the life
a day in the life of an hvac technician
Every heat wave and cold snap, you are the most wanted person in town. The trade nobody thinks of until they need it — and the demand curve that comes with that.
A note from Gigi
heating, cooling, and the physics between. always in season.
A typical day and path
This is generated guide content for exploration, not a prediction of fit or employment.
- 07:30: Van stock check, then first call: a furnace that quit overnight with a newborn in the house. You are the difference in that house's day.
- 10:00: Diagnostics — pressures, temperatures, electrical. It is applied thermodynamics with a customer watching, and the reasoning is the skill.
- 13:00: A heat-pump install with a partner. The energy transition runs through this trade, and the retrofit backlog is measured in years.
- 16:00: Last call is maintenance — the quiet money. Techs who explain clearly get requested by name, and requested-by-name is the career.
- Now: Physics 11 and comfort with electrical basics. This is the thinkiest of the mechanical trades day-to-day.
- After grade 12: College HVAC/refrigeration foundation, then apprenticeship with a mechanical contractor.
- Years 1–5: Paid apprenticeship across install and service. Service is where diagnosis skills — and pay — grow fastest.
- After: Commercial/industrial refrigeration, controls specialization, or your own service company.

FAQ
Is HVAC a good trade to get into right now?
It has the strongest tailwind of any trade on this list: heat-pump conversion programs, building electrification, and a retiring workforce all at once. Demand is not the question; whether you enjoy diagnostic work is.
HVAC vs electrician?
Deeply similar career math. HVAC has more customer-facing service and more thermodynamics; electrical has broader industrial reach. Plenty of people choose by which shop answers first — both are strong answers.
Do HVAC techs work in awful conditions?
Attics in July and rooftops in January are real. So is the van with your name on it, the daylight schedule, and being genuinely welcomed at every door because you fix the thing they cannot live without.
