Day in the life

a day in the life of a physiotherapist

You are the difference between 'it healed' and 'it works again.' A master's-level career where progress is visible week by week — yours and theirs.

A note from Gigi

bodies want to move. you're the one who shows them how again.

A typical day and path

This is generated guide content for exploration, not a prediction of fit or employment.

  • 08:00: Post-surgical knee, week three. Progress is measured in degrees of bend, and you celebrate every five like a coach.
  • 10:00: An assessment that is mostly detective work: where pain shows up is rarely where the problem lives.
  • 13:00: A stroke-recovery session. Neuroplasticity is real and slow; your patience is the treatment as much as the exercises.
  • 15:30: The honest part: convincing a patient to actually do the home program. Motivation science is half this career.
  • Now: Sciences plus any coaching, training or rehab-adjacent volunteering — admissions committees read for the helping instinct.
  • Undergrad: Kinesiology is the classic runway (not the only one). Keep the GPA guarded; MPT admission is genuinely competitive.
  • MPT years: Two years, placement-heavy across hospital, clinic, neuro and community settings.
  • After: License, then pick a lane: sport, ortho private practice, neuro, pediatric. Clinic ownership is the wealth path.

FAQ

How competitive is physiotherapy school in Canada?

Very — MPT programs routinely admit under a quarter of applicants, with GPA cutoffs that surprise people. A backup plan (kinesiology careers, OT, athletic therapy) belongs in the application year, not after a rejection.

Physio vs occupational therapy?

Physio rebuilds movement and strength; OT rebuilds daily function (dressing, working, living independently). Same school competitiveness, same master's structure, deeply overlapping satisfaction. Shadow both — many applicants switch after one afternoon.

Can physiotherapists make good money?

Employed physios earn the solid-not-spectacular range above. The wealth stories are clinic owners and sport specialists. It is a career where entrepreneurship, not seniority, raises the ceiling.
